The Reactor®

Placement of a chest tube into the thoracic cavity has been around for more than 100 years with virtually no change in technique! Imagine driving a Model T car today down the highway – would it be as safe, fast, effective and reliable as a modern car at 65 MPH? The Reactor® offers medical professionals a revolutionary way to insert chest tubes into the thoracic cavity. In other words, it is minimally invasive compared to the open technique! Putting this in perspective, how many appendectomies are still done with an open incision? The Reactor® has been sold since 2015 and has multiple issued and pending patents.

Sharp Medical Products, LLC is also planning even more enhancements in the form of a “generation 2” device with an anticipated availability date of 2019. For more information Click Here

N-G Tube

The first use of a tube in the stomach appears to have been with a silver tube in the 17th century by Fabricius ab Aquapendente, a professor of surgery. In 1790, John Hunter fed a patient via a hollow leather tube for 5 weeks. Despite more than 200 years of usage, N-G tubes still suffer from 2 fundamental problems; painful insertion and difficulty with ongoing aspiration of stomach contents. Sharp Medical Products, LLC (SMP) has addressed these two core problems and has begun work to improve them.

O2MAX®

Simple oxygen face masks were patented in the 1950s and there has been relatively little improvement in oxygen delivery; the typical mask delivers ~40-50% oxygen even when run at 15 L of oxygen per minute. Sharp Medical Products, LLC (SMP) has redesigned the face mask from virtually the ground up to create our mask called “O2MAX®”. 3 Research studies have bene performed to date on “O2MAX®”. O2MAX® has 9 critical enhancements resulting in oxygen delivery of up to 64% more than market leading masks! This game changing technology has been developed in such a way that “O2MAX®” will not cost more than other masks to manufacture.

SMP has applied for 2 patents, build commercial grade articles and is presently in discussions with international companies for the purchase or license of this technology.

“O2MAX®” potentially could replace the estimated 1.2 billion face masks presently being used annually throughout the world.

SMP Receives FDA Approval for the Reactor®

Sharp Medical Products, LLC Receives FDA Approval for the Reactor® Chest Tube Insertion Device

Geneva, IL – Sharp Medical Products, LLC, a privately held company and maker of the ReactorTM, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Reactor Chest Tube Insertion Device for commercial distribution. The Reactor® offers medical professionals a revolutionary way to insert chest tubes into the thoracic cavity to drain blood, air or an infection. Placement of a chest tube into the thoracic cavity has been around for more than 100 years with virtually no change in technique – until now!

Some of the design features of the Reactor® to markedly improve the insertion of chest tubes includes:

  • Rotating and retracting blade (carves not punctures through tissue)
  • Oval shaft (fits between ribs better than round)
  • Chest wall tunnel – (creates a constant diameter narrow tunnel of ~ 1 cm)

Potential advantages of the Reactor® include smaller incision and faster procedure times. Other advantages may become clear with time.

“We are ecstatic to have received our FDA approval to begin to market and sell the Reactor®,” said Dave Sash, National Sales Director for Sharp Medical Products. “The Reactor® is truly one of those unique medical devices that can help revolutionize medicine – it is not an incremental change but a quantum leap improvement for the insertion of chest tubes into the thoracic cavity – the present method has been around for more than 100 years with virtually no improvement.”

Sharp Medical Products, LLC. was founded by a U.S. surgeon. Both U.S. and international patents have been issued. For more information visit www.sharpmedicalproducts.com or call 630-232-8002.
